Description
The craftsmen of the figurines of the horseman and the horse dating from the first half of the 6th century BC, were apprenticed in Corinthian workshops located in northwestern Greece. The rider was found in the first excavations of Karapanos, while the horse was found in the newest excavations by Professor D. Evangelidis. In the Louvre Museum there is a similar horseman to which the horseman of the Karapanos Collection is best suited. The rider is characterized by rich plasticity with a thin and firm torso. The pair of horsemen probably represented Castor and Polydeuces and the whole was perhaps a marriage vow.
