Description
Sarcophagus of a local laboratory with Attic and Asia Minor influences. The front, main, side of the case and part of one side narrow side are preserved almost intact. The obverse shows two garland arches of leaves and fruits (pomegranates, grapes, acorns, ears of corn). The bows are fastened with ribbons that are tied in bows to bucephales at the ends and a rectangular panel in the center. In the free field above the arches are attributed Mermaids. The table (tabula) bears an engraved inscription in six rows: Φλα(βία) / Τροφίμη / ἐτῶν μα΄/ Φλα(βία) Τροφίμη / ἐτῶν ε΄/ χαίρετε. On the side there is a bow of a similar garland of fruits and leaves which is tied in the middle with a ribbon and has a Gorgone inside. The decoration with garland arches supported by bucephalae is known from Attic sarcophagi, but the central panel is characteristic of Asia Minor sarcophagi.
