Bronze eagle, possibly from a scepter of a statue of Zeus
Origin
Dodoni, Ioannina
Period
470-460 BC
Material
Copper
Description
Bronze eagles with closed wings have survived from scepter-revealing and were probably parts of larger statues of Zeus. The eagle steps on the calyx of a flower inlaid into a scepter that the god would hold and is one of the few bronze figurines of birds. Austerity and clarity distinguish the plastic surface of the work and the scaly curves of the lobes. The circular embossed bulbs emphasize the sharpness of the eagle's gaze.
